Weaver Style Writing workshop with Glenis Sheather - Sunday 5 October - 10am to 3pm

Bookings close – 28 September 2025 – Minimum of 6 people for the class to run.

This lettering is my monoline variation of Weaver Script, which is based on the script designed by American calligrapher, the late Gwen Weaver.  There are only 26 letters in this script (no capitals) so can be easily learnt in a four-hour workshop and is suitable for all skill levels.  The aim of the workshop is to have fun playing with some interesting letters, which can then be used to create a small piece of work.

Participants should bring with them the following:

Fine liner/s, such as Staedtler pigment liner, Stabilo point, Unipin, etc. in sizes between 0.1 - 0.5.

A4 layout pad or A4 computer paper

A sheet of tracing paper

HB pencil

Plastic ruler

Coloured pencils (optional)

Vivacious Versals Workshop with Valerie Keevers - Saturday 25 October - 10am to 4pm

Bookings close – 17 October 2025 – Minimum of 6 people for the class to run.

Versals are the capital letters that were used to begin a new chapter or paragraph in manuscripts.  This workshop will show you how to modernise capitals for our time.  They can be vibrant, colourful, and fun to do.  Come and see where your imagination will take you as we look at many different ways of drawing letters.  Class suitable for every skill level, from people who have never drawn a letter to those who have great experience.

Please bring: An A4 plain paper pad OR some A4 Computer paper.

Alternatively bring some A5 size pieces of watercolour type paper.

HB Pencil, eraser and ruler.

Coloured pencils OR watercolour paints.

If using watercolour paints you will need a small pointed brush, mixing brush and water jar.

Adelaide Trip - Day 4

I had been looking forward to this day, as this was the day I was going to the Art Gallery of South Australia to see their advertised exhibition More Ink Than Ocean.

With anticipation I headed to the Art Gallery of South Australia to see the exhibition. It was raining on the way up and North Terrace was a little wet but the buildings are still magnificent.

The volunteer at the information desk seemed to be quite surprised that I had come all the way from N.S.W, to see the exhibition, even after explaining that I was very interested in calligraphy and practiced Western Calligraphy. When she took me through to the room, I could see why. It was just that, a room. I had been expecting a much bigger exhibition with more pieces in it. I was disappointed, as this had been the reason I had come to South Australia, though the room next door, which housed The Power of Pattern: The Ayako Mitsui Collection, proved to be a pleasant surprise.
So I would suggest that if you are thinking of coming to this exhibition ensure there is something else on in Adelaide that you also want to see.

The weather was now matching my mood, damp and grey and after lunch I decided to head back up to the shopping precinct for some shopping therapy when some how I found that I had wandered in to the State Library of South Australia. I had been viewing an exhibition in The Institute Building and wandered down a corridor into what turned out to be another part of the State Library.

Now they say that every cloud has a silver lining, and the State Library turned out to be mine.

Hopefully I have this correct (you can confirm on the State Library of South Australia's website) but I think I had found myself in the Mortlock Wing of the Library.

Elegance at its height.

Housed on the ground floor of this wonderful wing, is a social history of South Australia. The history covers many varied elements of South Australia's rich heritage, arts, political, and of course wine. Turning a corner to another display case I came across these beautiful manuscripts, which totally brightened my day and were a pleasure to pour over.

Each manuscript is the property of the library and were photographed with no flash, so as not to affect the documents in anyway.

I was now very happy and had seen some beautiful works of calligraphy. All of these manuscripts were in the Winery section, and I had to laugh, when reading the explanation of one of the documents,  to find that it laid out the consequences for monks who sampled the produce.

On the walk home from the State Library and Art Gallery, I came across this sign for a cafe not far from the hotel. I loved the Art Deco feel to it. Some days it pays to lift your eyes to the sky!

Adelaide Trip - Day 1

I took a short trip to Adelaide this month, with the purpose of going to the Art Gallery of South Australia to see the exhibition More Ink Than Ocean.

To be a bit different, instead of flying down to Adelaide I decided to start the journey by going down by train. Though not a train spotter I do love train travel, having crossed Canada by train a number of years ago. So my lovely travel agent Merryn from Ramsgate Travel Service http://www.ramsgatetravel.com.au/ organised for me to travel from Sydney to Adelaide on the Indian Pacific. The Indian Pacific, goes, as the name suggests, from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean across Australia, and vice-a-versa. I was only completing the first part of the trip from Sydney to Adelaide and leaving the train there, while fellow travellers on the train were heading across to Perth to complete the journey.

We left Sydney at 3.05pm from Central Railway Station though check in was earlier and you could feel the anticipation of the train travellers while standing on the platform. The train is long, someone told me that it held fourty eight carriages, plus the locomotives and a vehicle carrier. All I know that it was the length of two platforms of the station. The photo shows one of the engines (no that's not me but a fellow passenger) and then one platform length of cars. I had to stand in the middle of the platform and take one photo down the platform and then photo up the platform to be able to capture all of them. Add that length again and you have the size of the train.

We were welcomed on board by carriage host individually, who provided information on the trip, its inclusions and off train excursions. Another lovely lady came around to organise times for meals with us. Then it was off, travelling through the suburbs of Sydney on one of Australia's icon trains, later afternoon we were travelling through the Blue Mountains and then onto the Western Plains. By 7.30pm having just been seated for dinner (sounds extra special doesn't it?) we arrived into Bathurst to collect a couple of passengers and then we were off again.

Dinner was beautiful. All meals and drinks were included in the package I had chosen, so my three course meal consisted of Lamb for Entree, a roasted vegetable pasta for main and a selection of Australian cheeses and fruit for dessert. I really don't know how the chefs and other staff turned out these beautiful meals, in a small kitchen on a rocky train. My hat goes off to those people.

I was travelling by myself, which never never worries me, as I feel it gives me the opportunity to meet new people and this I did over dinner. I shared the table with a father and son who were travelling over to Perth for a few days, and we discussed what they were doing in Perth, and what I would be doing in Adelaide, the latest Rugby League scores and my calligraphy and the son's photography. It was an interesting discussion but good food, and the rocking of the train took it's toll and I began to feel sleepy, so it was time to retire. After the necessary preparations and with the berth changed to its night configuration, I was propped up in bed and reading until the eyes began to close and only the occasional light broke the darkness.

World War 1 in Pen and Brush Ends Successfully

Well it is over and done with, done and dusted as they say. The pictures are down and the reviews are in. The exhibition was successful and with ten pieces sold, artists are happy but more importantly calligraphy was promoted and brave men and women remembered.
